Haitian Steel

Haitian steel drum cutouts emerged during the mid-twentieth century and quickly became a popular form of folk art.  Steel drums that are too old to transport oil are purchased for recycling into steel drum art.  After the residue is burned out of old steel oil drums, they are flattened and designs are drawn on the surface with chalk.  The designs are then cut using hammer and chisel.  Most of the pieces are signed by the artist.
